Ilan Eshkeri records Centurion with LMO

1 ResizedIt is Britain A.D.117 and a group of Roman soldiers have to fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack..

Centurion, directed by Neil Marshall, stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko and was filmed at Shepperton studios, Ealing Studios and extensively on location at the Glenfeshie Estate, Kincraig in the Scottish Highlands.

Ilan Eshkeri scored for 30 strings (12 violins, 8 violas, 6 celli and 4 double basses) over 2 sessions with a subsequent brass session featuring 4 horns, trumpet, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone and tuba. Andy Brown conducted LMO which was led by Tom Bowes and the sessions took place at Abbey Road studio 1. Steve McLaughlin engineered and co -produced the score with Teese Gohl and Ilan Eshkeri.2 Resized Further overdub contributions were made at Abbey Road by John Kenny  playing a highly unusual Scottish instrument called the Carnyx, and at North Pole studios with Mike Taylor (bodhrán) and Gill Tingay (celtic harp).

Centurion was released in the UK in April 2010 by Celador Films.

LMO record The Killer Inside Me with Melissa Parmenter

1 ResizedThe Killer Inside Me is based on the novel written in 1952 by American writer Jim Thompson which tells the story of an American deputy sheriff who is slowly unmasked as a psychotic killer. It stars Kate Hudson, Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba and is directed by Michael Winterbottom.

Melissa Parmenter, who co-composed the score with Joel Cadbury, had earlier recorded piano solos for the soundtrack, and was working with LMO for the first time. The score featured 3 violins, 3 violas, 3 celli, double bass and clarinet and it was recorded in 2 sessions at Angel studios. Tom Bowes led LMO which was conducted by Artem Vassiliev and Niall Acott engineered the sessions.2 Resized

The Killer Inside Me is produced by Revolution Films and will be released in 2010.

David Gray, Annie Lennox and an LMO quartet perform on The Graham Norton Show

Second ResizedLMO recently recorded Your Sudden Death Question – the first of 4 new Lewis films for ITV.

This incredibly popular series, now in its fourth season, stars Kevin Whately as Inspector Lewis and Laurence Fox as DS James Hathaway and Your Sudden Death Question is directed by Dan Reed.

Barrington Pheloung used a 17 piece string section with flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and harp for his underscore which was recorded at Abbey Road Studio 2.First Resized

Primary ResizedThe Kid is based on the international bestseller which was published in 2003. It tells the moving story of Kevin Lewis, played by Rupert  Friend, whose early life suffered from appalling parenting and bullying at school. After he was put into care Kevin found himself caught up in a criminal underworld that knew him as The Kid. Yet, in spite of all this he survives to have a successful relationship and make a fulfilling life for himself.

Besides Ilan Eshkeri’s underscore for The Kid which featured 12 violins, 4 violas, 2 celli, double bass, flute, oboe and clarinet, many classical music references were recorded for the soundtrack. These included sections from Elgar’s cello concerto, recorded with Caroline Dale, Brahms 3rd symphony, Pachelbel’s Canon and Beethoven’s Pastoral symphony. The recordings were made at Abbey Road studio 1 with LMO led by David Juritz and conducted by Andy Brown. Steve Mclaughlin and Ilan Eshkeri co – produced the sessions.

Secondary ResizedAfter the orchestra had finished, LMO pianist Sally Heath recorded an excerpt from Rimsky – Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee and Eric Satie’s Gnossiennes no 2.

The Kid, directed by Nick Moran, also stars James Fox and Natascha McElhone and will be distributed by Falcon Films early in 2010.

LMO record Planet 51 with James Brett

The inhabitants of the CG animated movie Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when an astronaut arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, he has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and try to return home. The film features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman, and John Cleese.

Apart from the orchestral score, 15 further sessions were convened on various pop songs from the 1950’s which feature in the movie, the standard line up comprising vocals, guitar, bass guitar, Hammond organ and kit. Some of the songs had fuller arrangements featuring brass, saxes and strings and they were all recorded at Abbey Road studios 2 and 3.

Peter Cobbin was the recording engineer and Graham Walker was Music Producer for all the sessions.

However his past comes back to haunt him one morning when he is shot 22 times on the docks of the old port. Incredibly, he survives and resolves to seek out Tony Zacchia (played by Kad Merad) – the only man who would dare try to kill him…

Klaus Badelt used strings and brass for the orchestral part of his soundtrack. The strings numbered 22 violins, 8 violas, 8 celli and 6 double basses and the brass group featured 4 horns, 2 tenor trombones, 2 bass trombones and tuba doubling cimbasso. Orchestrations were by Bob Elhai and the score was recorded in 4 sessions at Abbey Road studio 1. Jackie Shave led LMO which was conducted by Andy Brown and the sessions were engineered and co -produced by Jake Jackson and Pete Cobbin in London and Klaus Badelt and Chris Brooks on a link from Los Angeles.

22 Bullets (also known as L’immortel for the French release of the film in January 2010) is adapted from the best selling crime novel L’immortel by Franz – Olivier Giesbert and will be distributed worldwide by EuropaCorp Distribution.

LMO record From Time to Time with Ilan Eshkeri

From Time to Time, written and directed by Julian Fellowes is a haunting ghost story spanning two worlds, two centuries apart. 13 year old Tolly discovers during a Christmas holiday with his Grandmother that he can travel between the two, thus beginning an adventure that unlocks family secrets which have laid dormant for generations…

From Time to Time was made by Ealing studios and stars Dominic West, Maggie Smith and Timothy Spall. It was shot on location at Athelhampton House, Dorset and will be released later in 2009.

Ilan Eshkeri used 28 strings for the score (16 violins, 6 violas, 4 celli, and 2 double basses) plus oboe (doubling cor anglais) and clarinet (doubling bass clarinet). David Juritz led LMO, Andy Brown conducted and Steve McLaughlin was the engineer / co producer with Ilan Eshkeri. The score was recorded in a double session at Abbey Road studio 2.

The Silent Army wins a golden film award

The Silent Army has won the Golden film award for 2009 in the Netherlands. LMO recorded the soundtrack with composer Nick Laird – Clowes in October 2008.
