The Boat that Rocked
The Boat that Rocked is a new comedy written and directed by Richard Curtis for Working Title films, distributed by Universal. Set on a pirate radio ship in the 1960’s, the movie tells the story of a band of rogue DJ’s that captivated Britain by playing the new pop music of the age at a time when this and indeed the whole 60’s freedom movement was being repressed by the British Government.
In a stirring scene, the DJ’s know that the Government will be coming to try and close them down and each gives an impassioned speech of defiance. This scene features the only orchestral music in the film – a 61 piece LMO playing the beautiful ‘Nimrod’ from Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The recording was made at Abbey Road studio 1, conducted by Andy Brown, engineered by Andrew Dudman and produced by Steve Price who was also music editor on the film which, not surprisingly features many 60’s pop songs!
